When is it okay to take a picture of a cool car on the street?

Immaculately modeled McLaren for your trouble.

I saw this really nice car on the street, but I sometimes feel like a car owner wouldn’t like me taking pictures of his or her car. When is it customary to take a photo of a fancy car?

Eh, just snap it. If the owner doesn’t like it, whatever. I’m only against taking photos if you have to trespass to get the shot.

Personally, I wouldn’t care if people took pictures if I owned a nice car, as long as you couldn’t see me in it.

That makes sense.

Cars aren’t like people, whose souls get sucked into a photograph, so there’s nothing wrong with it.

Any time, just don’t do it if you’re driving next to me. I hate when people do that and they start drifting into my lane.

I often search IG via various hashtags to see if I can find the photos people take, I’ve found a handful. It’s kind of fun...

I would imagine they would actually like you taking pictures of their cars as it will make them happy that they’ve bought a car worthy enough of someone to take a picture of it

What are they gonna do? Take your phone? Make you delete it? Sue you? Just take the picture. UNLESS, it’s a car that’s a hidden secret of sorts, then ask before you shoot if possible.

Also, don’t get all up in the car’s face. By that, I mean don’t go and lean over the car to get that “perfect” picture.

The only time I don’t take picture of a car in public is if it’s in a private driveway and I can’t get a picture without going on to the property. If the car is driving down the road or sitting in a parking lot, snap away. Most owners love it, it’s seen as a compliment.

I can tell you that I love nothing more than to see people photographing my car. If we’re being honest, cool cars are pretty much all about about inflating the owner’s ego, and photos are a great way to do that.

Here are some cars that I photographed passing on the street, and how the rich snobby evil meanies who owned them responded:

Kinja'd!!!

Driver waved and slowed so I could take the picture.

Kinja'd!!!

Driver gave me a nod and revved the engine.

Kinja'd!!!

Driver waved and returned my thumbs up.

Kinja'd!!!

Owner walked up while I was taking the picture, and we talked about the car briefly.

Related question: is it OK to take a picture of a car at a show without spending taking the time to chat with the owner? I always feel awkward doing that. As if I’m saying, “I like your car but you look like a boring person so fuck you.”

I drive a classic mini and a viper. Not to sound boastful, but people take photos at every stoplight. Doesn't bother me one bit. It makes me feel cool :)

If the car is in public its fair game. I did stop and ask the owner of a Z8 who was pumping gas at the time if he minded if I took a picture, but I only did that since he was standing there.

If its in public, all the time; but respect the owner and his or her’s privacy. Don’t follow the owner and his car to their house, etc..
